A patio cover can be made from may different types of materials such as aluminum, vinyl, and wood.  Each material is a viable option and will depend on your personal preference for design and how much maintenance work you are willing to put in. A metal cover like aluminum would require very little work and just a clean when it becomes dirty. It can heat up in the summer and could possibly increase the temperature around the area. Vinyl is another good low maintenance option and is waterproof as well. You may be a bit limited with colours and designs for vinyl and it is typically no recommended to paint over vinyl. A wood cover can create a really nice aesthetic but will be the most hands on in terms of maintenance work.
